Welcome to Will and Goody - The Type 1 Team

Will was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in January of 2021, at the age of 9. We didn't accept the rollercoaster life of spiking and falling sugars, OR the rising inevitable doom of diabetic complications and a shortened life.  We decided to question the guidelines that set us up to fail and instead of feeding high carb foods, choose SMART CARB options. Not only has this lifestyle change given us the peace of NORMAL A1Cs with minimal lows, but it has offered our entire family the gift of health. This website is to inspire other parents to consider FOOD as a TOOL on your Type 1 journey and trust your inner voice in the face of what is possible! We can all Type WON!

OUR APPROACH

We don’t eat foods that spike blood sugars, so we can use reasonable and precise amounts of insulin. This way, we avoid uncontrollable highs from sugar and urgent lows from too much insulin. Sounds logical, right? It is. It also sets Will up for a complication free life later because he doesn’t run diabetic blood sugars.

 

SMART CARBS are foods that are very low glycemic and don’t spike blood sugars.

We avoid: Grains, potatoes, corn, rice, the million names that sugar is called, fruit (except small quantities of berries) wheat/rice/potato/tapioca/arrowroot/cassava flours.

We eat tons of veggies, all the protein, healthy fats and tons of delicious treats made with safe flours (like almond, coconut or lupin).

There is no difference between a “natural or healthier” sugar then straight up cane sugar, for us. Honey, coconut sugar, fruit sugar etc.…it all works the same way. I really wish homemade sourdough or real maple syrup worked…. but it doesn’t. And no…any “health benefits” from sugar foods will NEVER outweigh normal blood sugars.

At the end of the first 90 days, after being diagnosed, I pulled a comparison 90-day clarity report. (Clarity is an app associated with Dexcom).

The graph on the left says Oct. but it is really only the first couple of weeks because Will was diagnosed in Jan. Look at the difference!

The left is the first couple of weeks. We were following the advice of carb counting, tater tot eating and big insulin bolusing. The one on the right is low carb foods, significantly decreased insulin needs (including both meal and basal) and living a much less stressful life.

INGREDIENTS MATTER. Change the food, change EVERYONE’S LIFE.

We do NOT have to be victims to this condition. Consider the things that you think you know…could be WRONG. Don’t rely on the limited beliefs of others to shape your future. DO NOT allow the opinion of others become your child’s REALITY.

LOW BLOOD SUGARS are not due to a LACK OF CARBS. They are ONLY caused by TOO MUCH INSULIN.
